LE MIME ?...
Mime is the actor, its acting before it is corrupted by speech. Mime is the substance of theatre as opposed to its accident, literature. By learning the axioms of the body and experimenting harmony and virtuosity, mimes perform as they would and not just as they could. From the very inception of a true language of the body, one with a potential for refinement close to that of human voice, actors can no longer justifiably behave in a trivial manner. The artist of the body is conscious of what he does when he chooses, through silence, to transgress speech ; he nurtures countless portraits of reality through his manners of being and behaving. All else is anecdotal and of little interest. Mime focuses on the framework of acting, as it is not depraved by any aesthetic or literary complement. The mime’s body is pushed or enthused by its thinking, not the other way around.
COURSE OBJECTIVES AND CONTENT
BEGINNERS
This course is an initiation to corporeal-mime technique as it applies to the practice of theatre. Students will be introduced to a dramatic vocabulary that is a true gestural grammar encompassing the body as well as planes, lines and areas in space, dynamism and rhythm. Moreover, the performers' imagination is stimulated by improvisation through which the concepts of neutrality, presence and absence (solo), causality and polarity (duo) and staging (group) are explored.
No prerequisite.
ADVANCED
Based on corporeal-mime technique, this course focuses on a practical approach to "non-verbal" dramaturgy. Objective elements of the creative process are explored, including:
- The dynamic and rhythmic structure;
- The impact of space and time on gestural vocabulary;
- The relationship of inert (costumes, props) elements with the actors' performance and the meaning of the work;
- The concept of angel and hero as applied to the transposition of reality into mythical characters and situations. Actors become familiar with intuition through a fertile and radical artistic language by which one supports the intent.
Prerequisite: Participants must have some experience in the performing arts or have studied at the École de Mime.
FRIDAY AND SATURDAY COURSES
Courses combining beginner and advanced levels provide models of mastery for novices and remind experienced students of the learning and assimilation processes. Friday courses focus on composition, grammar, systems and repertoire while Saturday courses deal with technique and improvisation.
